It’s looking like a possible injury at this point. she is using different techniques to get the muscles to stop being so tight... Lifting brings me joy. I do this because I LOVE it. I lift because every day, it’s a promise I’ve made. A promise to make myself a priority. And if you’re willing to keep promises to your loved ones, you sure as hell better be keeping promises to yourself! I know some women look at weight training and say “I don’t want to do that, I don’t want to get bulky” (I PROMISE YOU WON’T) or maybe feel intimidated and don’t know where to start (hire a trainer/coach, seriously) or enjoy other types of exercise, and that’s ok! Lifting is it for me though. I get pumped walking into the gym when I think of how I’m going to challenge my body during this session. I feel excitement when I accomplish something that a few sessions ago, was really difficult. I want to share my passion while teaching and guiding others on their own fitness and nutrition goals. I’m at a phase in my life where my core definition is about none and my body fat percentage is a little higher than I’d like it to be. I have to remind myself that I don’t come from an athletic background. I was into theater and choir, would have rather read books inside my AC’d bedroom than be outside in the 120° heat where I grew up in Palm Springs. Besides skateboarding and a stint of volleyball, athleticism was not my cup of tea until much later in life, so building and maintaining muscle is not something that comes easy for me. And that’s ok. I’m happy being a work in progress and I’m content with that providing a wealth of knowledge I can use to help and relate to my clients, and even people who aren’t my clients! I’m feeling so proud of myself because I was able to do an incline of 7.5 for 10 minutes! So usually I do 5.0 incline for 20 and then slowly decrease the incline for the last 10 mins. Today I did 10 mins at 5.0, 10 mins at 7.5, and the last 10 gradually went down to 0.0! (2/2) It’s hard not to think of everything this injury has taken from me. I can’t run marathons. I can’t run half-marathons. I can’t compete in most lifting competitions because I can’t back squat or deadlift. My love and insatiable need for athletic competition has been slaughtered prematurely, and with it, a core part of my personality. This is my new normal. But we must go on, right? It could be worse. I can still lift and run most days, even through immense pain. I can find ways around conventional lifts to target the same areas without putting pressure on my back or doing anything load bearing on my spine. And so, through the mental fog of Percocet 325mg every four hours on top of muscle relaxers and steroids, we cry, defeated, and adjust our workouts to get back in the gym another day and hope for the best. (1/2) Last night was another night in the ER because of my back. We had our suspicions that donating plasma was triggering flare-ups because I experienced hemolysis after every donation in the form of moderate back pain. I donated Saturday and come Monday, ON GLUTE DAY, my back tightened half way through hip thrusts. I backed off and stopped my workout, hoping I caught it in time. I could walk normally out of the gym but after an hour and a half, my adrenaline had worn off and my back got worse and continued to increase in pain. We drove to two hospitals because of the wait times and I still waited 3 hours in hard plastic chairs, desperate for comfort. The spinal injections I had in August caused only pain and no relief. It was my last option besides surgery, which my Colombia-trained neurosurgeon and I decided against so I could continue to lift and run and be my athletic self. He’s pleased with my lifting and running because, though my scans will never get better, they aren’t getting worse, and keeping my scans the same is our absolute goal. Because of lifting and running, we’re achieving that. He’s proud of my determination and will power to push through my pain to continue doing what I love and to help my back from degenerating. This is my “the verdict is still out” face. Today was day 2 of trying out a plant-based diet. So far: Pros: • lots of fruits and veggies • everything I’ve eaten is tasty Cons: • I’m always hungry • I’m craving more protein and not really sure how to get it quickly and easily I’ve been eating quite a lot of protein daily for the last few years, close to 130-150g each day. I know that’s on the high end, but I also credit it with keeping me feeling full. This has been a struggle for me the last two days. I rarely feel completely satiated after eating, and I feel legitimately hungry again two hours later. You’d think that I’d be craving candy or cookies, but today, it’s been string cheese, protein bars, eggs, and lean meat. In the end, I’m not sure this will be a sustainable lifestyle for me. I’m going to keep trying it for a couple of weeks, though, to give my body some time to adjust and then go from there. Interestingly, my husband has had no complaints, which just goes to show that every body is different, and every person’s diet should be individualized to what works best for them, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Fifty-five of one-hundred days. . That’s how many days I completed before my injury. I wholeheartedly believed I’d be on Day 86 today. Instead, I took to the pool and immensely enjoyed some water jogging, bicycling, low-resistance lower body work, and enjoying the deep sighs to catch my breath as I crossed the pool for another lap. . Even the best laid plans come with detours. I should have known “detours” would be part of this years theme as this baby, that will soon be in our arms, was a “detour” for the plans I THOUGHT we had for the year. . It’s easy to get lost or discouraged in the detours. It can seem easy to just give up the goal we had because “things changed.” In reality, I find that to be a lie. I’ve experienced firsthand there is more than one way to meet a desired goal. I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to walk for the remaining 5-weeks of my pregnancy. I was upset that I couldn’t finish my 100 days. I’m thrilled to be exercising in the pool. A healthy pregnancy and baby all kept in mind and respected within my body’s limits. . I’ve been working on a ton of deadlift volume sets since the end of May. I haven’t tried any 1 RM lifts since then and the least number of reps I have done is 5. My goal for a bit has been to do 275 x 10 reps. I am still working on that goal but today is a mini volume PR for me at 265 lbs. Not really fast and kind of janky. The last couple reps were a fight but pulled them up. . After the 265, I hit 275 for 6 reps. Today was my first time watching my comp videos and I am CRINGING 😩🤣 🤦🏾‍♀️ lol this rebuilding period can't happen fast enough. For Axle weights were 163, 183 lbs. #postpartumbody update ❤️ :: Zoe turns 16 months in a few days. I’ve still been breastfeeding her through the night but during the day I don’t nurse anymore and I guess that’s why I’m no longer as hungry and eat much less. I’ve been mainly still eating proteins salads and a lot of fruits cheese diary and nuts but have been staying off refined carbs and bread as much as I can help it, although I don’t make it a law that I can’t break but rather a way of life. If I really do want to have some ice cream or burgers etc, I will once in a while and then detox the next few days because I will feel so bloated! 😅 . This journey has been interesting in the sense that despite eating relatively clean and exercising regularly... it has taken me 16 months to actually get back into the same shape and strength as I was before I got pregnant ! . I don’t know how some mamas just shrink back into size after 6 months without doing anything, eating whatever they want! I guess we are all made differently and there’s really no point comparing ourselves to the next person! We need to eat and move and understand our own bodies! I feel like the whole expectation that you will lose weight when you breastfeed and that after 6 months you will lose ALL the weight and within 1 year you will be back in our exact same shape and strength can set some mamas up for a real disappointment and frustration. In reality, even being quite consistent with my food and exercise, I’m only JUST getting to my pre-pregnancy weight ! 😱 . For the longest time, I did not even see a change on the scale. BUT, as I continued to do what I knew was good for my body everyday, little by little, although the numbers did not show me I had lost “weight”, I was probably getting stronger and able to lift MORE Weight and growing muscles instead! . Sometimes we don’t see immediate results and by looking at things in the natural, we can be discouraged and disappointed. But keep going. Keep going. Keep feeding on what you have experienced to be encouraging and edifying to your soul and body. Keep listening to good news and truth. Do. It. Anyway. • • • • • • • I was supposed to go to the gym this morning. Coffee, reading and gratitude sounded better, so that it what I focused on. It’s ok to listen to what we want/need and take that break or that rest. What typically happens though is once we open the floodgates of taking a break from newly form habits or goals, we tend to drop into this free fall of self sabotage. Well, since I didn’t go to the gym, I’ll eat this pint of ice cream and get back to it tomorrow. However, we don’t get back to it tomorrow and 6 months later we are where we 1st started. This is why keeping those habits are so important! Did I get as good of workout as I would’ve if I went to the gym? No. I did move my body and keep the habit that I have formed though and that is what matters. That, is what keeps you going and building momentum.
